Abstract
This study investigates the diachronic development and syntactic functions of the Chinese Personal Pronouns Zán (咱) and Zìjiā (自家) through a textual analysis of historical literature. Examples of Zán were extracted and analyzed from sources such as The Secret History of the Yuan Dynasty (元朝秘史) and The Old Qida with Vernacular Explanations (老乞大諺解), while examples of Zìjiā were drawn from texts including the Buddha's Life Sutra (佛本行集經) and Collected Works of Zhu Xi (朱熹文集). The findings reveal that both Pronouns share certain functions, including self-reference and group reference by the speaker, semantic extension from singular to Plural forms, and a range of grammatical roles. However, notable differences were also observed. Zán, originally a Personal Pronoun, demonstrates strong Pragmatic inclusivity and a consistent diachronic Pattern in its Plural usage. In contrast, Zìjiā originated as a reflexive form and underwent complex semantic expansion, with its Plural forms emphasizing collectivity and self-identification. Syntactically, Zán can freely function as an object, whereas Zìjiā is restricted by syntactic constraints and does not appear as an object in attested examples. In conclusion, despite their functional similarities as Personal Pronouns, the two expressions exhibit significant differences in semantic origins, grammatical roles, and Pragmatic strategies. Therefore, rather than forming a mutually substitutable relationship, they should be understood as distinct and independent systems of expression. This study contributes foundational material for understanding the structure and historical evolution of Personal Pronouns in Medieval Chinese.
