Abstract

This paper explores the origins and historical transformations of the Peach Blossom Girl narrative by examining relevant sanqu lyrics, zaju plays, textual sources, and material culture from the Yuan and Ming periods. The core theme of fate in the story is interpreted from a socio-economic perspective, with the Peach Blossom Girl depicted as a challenger to the entrenched authority represented by the Duke of Zhou, embodying the popular aspiration to alter one’s destiny. A comparison of the two Ming editions of “the Peach Blossom Girl zaju” demonstrates that the ending in the Maiwangguan edition—in which the Peach Blossom Girl and the Duke of Zhou enter the service of the martial deity Zhenwu—reflects the political agenda of the Yongle Emperor and attests to the narrative’s widespread popularity in the Ming dynasty. By contrast, the Yuanqu xuan edition, produced by and for the literati, integrates extensive Daoist, popular, and mythological knowledge into the development of the narrative, reframing the folk tale within an intellectual tradition.
