Abstract
During the Republic of China period, especially during the 1920s to 1930s, social perceptions of the nandan (男旦, male actor performing as a dan (female role)) improved, and this period was considered the golden age of the nandan. However, it was also a time when anti-traditional sentiments were strong, and starting in the 1930s, the status of the nandan began to be challenged by the rise of nudan (女旦, female actor performing as a dan). In this context, a lively discourse emerged around the value and legitimacy of the nandan’s existence. Critics of the nandan often dismissed them without solid logical arguments, relying instead on ridicule or sweeping criticisms of their humanity. At the same time, elite intellectuals did not actively defend the nandan. Supporters of nudan argued that, in line with the spirit of the times, nandan actors should be phased out, since it was more natural for women to play female roles. From a modern perspective, the discourse around the nandan is limited by participants’ lack of cultural relativism and their conservative view of Chengshi (程式, acting norms).
