Abstract

Tanci emerged in the Ming dynasty and flourished through the Qing, becoming a key component of vernacular narrative-singing literature. Although its forms are diverse, the distinction between daiyanti (impersonated speech form) and sheshiti (narrative form) remains central. Early tanci texts primarily used the narrative form, but literati engagement led to the rise of daiyanti. He Bi Xi Xiang (《何必西廂》), the earliest known daiyanti tanci of the Qing, illustrates this shift. This paper examines how the text arranges chang (singing), bai (speaking), and qupai (tune structures) to balance performative and reading-oriented features. From a narratological perspective, it analyzes how the narrator’s role transforms from traditional storyteller to a dual narrator with explicit authorial intervention, constructing layered narration and didactic functions. Though it did not directly reshape the tanci system, He Bi Xi Xiang shows how literati explored the balance between performance and reading, offering a model for later daiyanti development and enriching our understanding of late imperial Chinese narrative-singing genres.
