생태복원 문제를 둘러싼 찬․반 논쟁은 환경철학의 주요 쟁점 가운데 하나이다. 생태복원 반대측에서는 생태복원은 자연에 대한 인간의 억압이요, 지배이기에 어떠한 복원 시도도 허용되어선 안 된다고 주장한다. 반면 찬성측에서는 생태복원은 훼손된 생태계가 지속가능성을 회복할 수 있도록 도와주는 진정한 보조수단이기에 적극 허용되어야 한다고 주장한다. 이 글의 목적은 이처럼 첨예하게 대립하고 있는 찬․반 양측의 주장을 검토한 후, 양측의 쟁점을 수렴할 수 있는 대안을 모색하는 데 있다. 그 대안으로 필자는 두 가지를 제안하고 있다. 하나는 ‘생태복원’의 개념을 보다 분명히 이해하는 것이다. 생태복원이란 인간 중심적 입장에서 자연을 지배하고 조작하는 것이 아니라 자연의 과정을 수용하면서 그 과정이 원만히 작동하도록 돕는 것을 말한다. 생태복원은 자연의 자율성을 침해하는 것이 아니라 오히려 자연의 회복력을 존중하고 촉진하는 행위로 이해해야 한다는 것이다. 두 번째 대안은 새로운 자연관을 제시하는 것으로, 필자는 그 새로운 자연관으로‘야생적 정원’으로서의 자연관을 제시하고 있다. 이 논문은 이러한 두 가지 대안을 통해 찬․반 양측의 쟁점을 수렴할 수 있다는 주장과 함께 그 근거를 제시하고 있다.
Abstract
The debate for and against ecological restoration is one of the major issues in environmental philosophy. Opponents of ecological restoration argue that it is human oppression and domination of nature and should not be allowed. On the other hand, the proponents argue that ecological restoration is a genuine aid to help damaged ecosystems regain sustainability and should be allowed. The purpose of this article is to examine the arguments of both the pro and con sides of this sharply contested debate, and to explore alternatives that might reconcile them. I propose two such alternatives. One is to understand the concept of “ecological restoration” more clearly. Ecological restoration is not about dominating and manipulating nature from an anthropocentric position, but rather about embracing natural processes and allowing them to work in harmony. Ecological restoration should be understood as an act of respecting and promoting nature's resilience, rather than violating its autonomy. The second alternative is to propose a new view of nature that is acceptable to both sides of the debate. I propose a new view of nature as a ‘wild garden’. This thesis argues that these two alternatives can reconcile the views of both pro- and anti-naturalists, and provides evidence to support them.
