초록

이글은 담론윤리와 심의적 장치를 통해 자연에 대한 배려가 가능한지를 살펴본다. 이와 관련해 생태주의 철학자들의 비판, 즉 담론윤리는 담론의 주체로 오로지 인간만을 허용하고 자연은 배제하는 부당한 인간중심주의라는 비판과 그리고 심의적 의사결정이 자연보전을 결과할 보장이 없다는 비판을 살펴본다. 이글의 주된 주장은 담론윤리는 그것이 추구하는 보편적이고 확대된 사고를 통해 자연의 목적적 가치를 인정할 수 있다는 점에서 인간중심주의이긴 하지만 정당화가 가능한 인간중심주의이라는 것이다. 또한 공론영역에서의 자연에 대한 광범위한 심의를 통해서 시민들은 생명의 가치, 생태계의 상호의존성에 눈 뜨게 된다고 주장한다. 결론적으로 심의와 자연보전 사이의 필연적 연관은 없지만, 심의는 자연의 가치와 자연에 대한 다양한 관점들이 발언되고 고려되는 통로를 제공하며, 이를 통해 시민들의 생태의식을 고양시킨다는 점에서 여전히 생태주의자들이 추구해야 할 방향이라고 주장한다.

Abstract

This article examines whether it is possible to care for nature by means of discourse ethics and deliberative decision-making. In order to do so, we deals with two critiques. One is that discourse ethics allows only human to participate in deliberation, and excludes nature. The other is that deliberative decision-making does not guarantee protection of nature. The aim of the article is that discourse ethics is anthropocentrism but justifiable anthropocentrism in the sense that discourse ethics can acknowledge the intrinsic value of nature through universal and extended thinking. Through wide deliberation in public sphere, citizens are made aware of intrinsic value of lifes and interrelatedness of ecosystem. There is no necessary relation between deliberation and green outcome. However, deliberation should still remain the goal of the ecologists because deliberation can provide the conductive context within which the variety of environmental values can be voiced and considered, and so heighten ecological consciousness of citizens.
