Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the problems arising from the concept of value in environmental ethics and explore potential solutions. Throughout the development of environmental ethics, the concept of value has played a central role in discussions regarding the moral status of non-human natural entities and the expansion of moral consideration. However, it has also become a source of confusion due to the proliferation of overlapping concepts and terminologies, leading to criticism that philosophical debates over value concepts isolate environmental ethics from practical reality. In response to these issues, this study first identifies the various concepts of value that have emerged in the process of expanding moral considerability. It then analyzes the confusion caused by the excessive use and overlap of value-related terms. To address this, the study applies R. M. Hare’s classification of values as a framework for systematically organizing these concepts and proposes appropriate translations for each. The study also critically examines the notion of objective value—independent of valuers—advocated by some environmental ethicists, and argues that such a notion fails to withstand the objections posed by Hare and J. L. Mackie. Finally, based on the preceding discussions, the study argues that environmental ethics should adopt a more practical and pragmatic direction.
