Abstract
Peter Singer is widely known for advocating the principle of equal consideration of interests and vegetarianism. The replaceability argument argues that the life of one animal can be replaced by the life of another, and this argument can be used to defend meat-eating. Singer accepts the replaceability argument; however, his acceptance is not straightforward. It is the result of Singer's debate and deliberation. Therefore, this study aims to examine the background behind Singer's acceptance of the replaceability argument. Furthermore, it seeks to explore how this argument—which appears to contradict both the principle of equal consideration of interests and vegetarianism—can exist within Singer's theoretical framework. Finally, this study will review major criticisms of Singer’s replaceability argument and assess whether it is valid.
