Abstract

This article focuses on the diverse representations and discourses of “Europe” that were explosively reappeared in popular magazines in the 1920s and 1930s, targeting the magazine Samcheolli. Contemporary Koreans viewed Europe as a comprehensive and multifaceted entity, developing a distinct imaginary geography at points of contact with the reality of Joseon. A macroscopic order emerged in which “Great Europe” and “New Europe,” “Imperial Germany” and “Revival Germany,” confronted each other, and “political discourse” and “cultural discourse” differentiated. Simultaneously, within these sub-strata, discourses of diverse contradictions and conglutination emerged. Amidst the widespread recognition of the separation of nation and state, the search for national autonomy was often absorbed into the project of nationalism, and expectations of international solidarity were linked to fascism and Nazism. Europe was a complex of symbols, a testament to national survival that overtook the state, an external community that confirmed Joseon as an equal member of humanity, an object of solidarity and action, and at the same time, a reminder of the importance of the existence of the state and political reconstruction. Along with Europe, Joseon people’s perceptions evolved and changed, while simultaneously rupturing and regressing. Through Europe as a touchstone, Joseon people revealed with relative clarity their complex and contradictory self-perceptions surrounding the nation, the state, and humanity. This article focuses not on the specific aspects of the solidarity and negotiation between Joseon and Europe, but rather on empirically extracting the contradictory aspects and heterogeneous thinking inherent in such relationships.
