Abstract
This article focuses on the hatred, conflict, and solidarity created by ‘Mobility’ in Hwang Mo-gwa’s SF novel “Voices of the Silent” (2023), which recreates the real historical event of “Gwandong Massacre” and attempts to examine what it means for historical imagination to meet SF imagination. The connection created by the movement from one land to another may sometimes be friendship, but in more cases, it may be hostility and hatred. Since the lower classes of Koreans were people who were constantly moving in the context of colonization, they eventually entered someone’s settlement, and tremendous conflict and hatred sprouted in it. The tragedy created by that hatred and conflict is the Kanto Massacre. In the “Voices of the Silent”, Hwang and the author approach the incident as writers who cross the region, not just looking at the Kanto Massacre in a Korean context or a nationalist context. She summons historical memories through the form of SF and shows the possibility of a post-nationalist SF historical narrative. Therefore, this article sought to examine how the SF novel “Voices of the Silent” builds a SF possible world that is close to reality based on science and fantasy, and how it describes events that happened in the past with the SF imagination in the language of the current generation.
