Abstract

The purpose of this study is to systematically examine the narrative representations that have influenced the memory formation of the “involved generation” concerning the Vietnam War, focusing on Korean novels about the Vietnam War. The discourse that raised the issue of civilian massacres by Korean troops is not only a confrontation between victims and perpetrators but also an aspect of the long-standing conflict within Korean society. Civilian organizations representing the victims and veteran groups denying the massacres have been polarized without reaching a conclusion, each trying to prove their legitimacy against a seemingly neutral government. In a situation where there is a need to analyze the polarized attitudes towards the same incident, it is essential to confront aspects of the internal conflicts that have continued over time. This study aims to consider the meaning and attitude that Korean society should have concerning the civilian massacres during the Vietnam War through the perspective of memory restoration and reconstruction in Vietnam War novels, given such a historical context. To fill the gaps in memory formed in official records, there is a need to highlight more than just the survivors’ experiences. Rather than showing the brutal facts of victimization through photos and figures, attempts should be made to recreate the world they lived in. Based on this necessity and awareness of the issue, this study seeks to approach the modes of memory regarding the civilian massacres during the Vietnam War. By analyzing the characteristics of a new generation’s memory construction, which addresses how to approach this issue in situations they have not personally experienced, the study focuses on why this issue is important to those who have “not experienced it” and aims to suggest a direction for finding the meaning and significance of memory methods after the perpetrator generation.
