클라우제비츠의 삼위일체(Trinity)는 ‘전쟁은 또 다른 수단에 의한 정치의 연속’, ‘군사적 천재’, ‘전쟁의 속성으로서 육체적 피로, 공포, 불확실성, 마찰’ 등의 개념과 더불어 『전쟁론(On War)』의 유명한 개념 중 하나이다. 이 개념은 학자들과 군인들에게 가장 빈번히 인용되지만 그 해석은 분분하며, 때로는 잘못된 방향으로 해석되기도 한다. 본 논문은 삼위일체의 잘못된 적용에 대한 두 가지 문제점을 첫째, 삼위일체의 본질에 대한 이해부족, 둘째, 복잡한 작전환경에 부합된 현대적 해석 부족으로 제시하고, 이를 해결하기 위해 삼위일체의 본질을 분석하여 그 개념을 현대적으로 해석하고자 한다. 먼저, ‘삼위일체의 본질탐구‘에서는 삼위일체에 대한 일반적인 오해에 대해 알아보고 『전쟁론』의 내용을 기초로 삼위일체의 본질 - 이성, 감성, 우연성 - 을 탐구할 것이다. ‘삼위일체의 현대적 해석 1’에서는 국가의 구성요소로서 국민, 국가, 군대의 개념을 확장 적용하여 각 주체들은 삼위일체의 본질 세 가지 요소들을 모두 포함하고 있음을 설명하겠다. ‘삼위일체의 현대적 해석 2’에서는 삼위일체 도출과정의 논리적 흐름 속에서 ‘싸움의 세 가지 요소’와 ‘삼위일체’의 연계성을 규명하고, 개념의 확장과 상호연결을 시도할 것이다. 본 논문은 단순히 삼위일체를 다른 방법으로 해석하는 시도로 그치기보다는, 복잡한 4차 산업혁명시대에 적용할 수 있는 개념으로서의 새로운 해석을 도출하고자 하였다. 클라우제비츠의 핵심개념인 삼위일체의 심도 있는 논의를 통해 본 논문이 차후 교리, 이론 분야에서 비판적, 창의적인 접근을 할 수 있는 근간이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
The Trinity of Clausewitz is the frequently quoted concept by scholars and military professionals in conjunction with 'war is a continuation of politics by other means', 'military genius', and 'physical fatigue, fear, fog, and friction.' However, the interpretation of the Trinity is divisive. This thesis explores the nature of the Trinity and its application to the modern warfare in order to resolve the two interpretative problems: First, lack of understanding regarding the Trinity, Second, insufficient considerations related to more complex and complicate operational environment. First, we will explore the general misunderstandings of the Trinity in the quest for the essence of the Trinity and analyze the nature of the Trinity based on the context of 'On War'. In the chapter of 'Modern Interpretation of the Trinity 1', the subject, as well as the elements of the nation which is characterized with people, state, and military, is proved that it contains all three elements of Trinity. In the chapter of 'Modern interpretation of the Trinity 2', Clausewitz's logical flow of the Trinity reveals the relationship between the 'three elements in the duel' and the 'Trinity', and tried for the expansion of concept of the Trinity using characteristics of Complexity Theory and the complex adaptive system. In this context, this thesis is expected to be a basis for critical and creative approaches in the later doctrinal and theoretical fields through the in-depth discussions of Clausewitz core concept, the Trinity.
