6·25전쟁기 네덜란드 참전에 관한 연구: 횡성전투 시 철수엄호 작전을 중심으로

횡성 전투는 6·25전쟁 기간 동안 가장 가슴 아픈 패전으로 기억되어왔다. 하지만 최근 연구에서는 국군 제3사단이 중공군의 작전목표를 분쇄하고, 그들의 공세를 성공적으로 지연시킨 의의를 통해 횡성 전투에 대한 새로운 인식의 전환을 모색하였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 관점의 연장 선상에서 1951년 2월 12일부터 13일까지 시행된 네덜란드 대대의 철수엄호 작전 경과 및 의의에 대하여 연구했다. 네덜란드 대대는 큰 피해를 무릅쓰고, 중공군의 공격을 받고 있던 미 제 38연대, 제 21지원대, 제 7지원대와 국군 제8사단을 안전하게 원주로 철수시키기 위한 철수엄호 작전을 시행하였다. 특히 대대장(소령 오우덴) 전사 후 지휘통제의 제한에도 불구하고, 이상 없이 지휘권이 인계(중화기중대장 대위 드 브리스)되어 대대 지휘통제가 유지되었다. 또한, 현장 지휘관인 중대장들의 적절한 상황판단과 전투 지휘로 12시간 동안 횡성을 방어할 수 있었다. 작전 기간 동안 몇몇 전술적 과오가 식별되었지만, 네덜란드 대대의 희생을 통해 원주지역으로 철수한 병력들이 신속하게 방어선을 구축할 수 있었다. 이로 인하여 원주 점령 후 서부전선의 UN군 측·후방을 위협하려는 중공군의 작전목표는 좌절되면서, 중공군 제4차 공세는 실패하게 되었다. 따라서 네덜란드 대대의 성공적인 횡성철수 작전이 중공군 제4차 공세의 실패에 미친 영향은 매우 크다 하겠다.
Abstract
In this paper, I studied about the progress and significance of the rear guard operation carried out by the Dutch battalion, which was not known so far in the extension of this view from Feb 12 to 13, 1951. In spite of the heavy damage, the Dutch battalion carried out the rear guard operation to withdraw the U.S 38th Regiment, the 21st Support Unit, the 7th Support Unit and the ROK 8th Infantry Division safely to Won-ju, which were under attacked by the Chinese army. In particular, despite the limitation of battalion command and control due to commander's death in battalion, the right to command was handed over without any problems. So they could maintain control of battalion and defend the Hoeng-seong over 12 hours through immediate judgment and action by the company commanders of the field. Although some tactical errors were identified during the operation, the Chinese army's operational aim to threaten the side and rear of the UN forces on the western front after the occupation of Wonju was frustrated by them, as the forces withdrew to Wonju by the sacrifice of the Dutch battalion quickly established a defensive line. So the 4th offensive carried out by Chinese army failed. Therefore, the successful rear guard operation on Hoeng-seong carried out by Dutch battalion has had a huge impact on the failure of the Chinese army's 4th offensive.
