Abstract

This study reestablishes Kim Sowol as the tragic origin of modern Korean lyric poetry. While influential previous scholarship has positioned Kim Sowol at the inception of modern Korean lyricism by arguing that he constructs a lyrical subject who attains a quasi-transcendental “nature” through surrendering the self to the natural world, this paper contends that such explanations overlook a crucial process. Specifically, I reexamine the formation of Sowol’s lyrical subject as one who accepts a radical severance from the Absolute—a subject who becomes, fundamentally, “one who cannot but lose.” First, this paper demonstrates that, like other coterie writers of the early 1920s, Kim Sowol initially embodied the position of “one who cannot lose.” I then argue that Sowol later dramatizes this non-lyrical individual upon a tragic stage, thereby rendering visible the failure and defeat inherent in the stance of one who cannot lose. By foregrounding this trajectory, the study positions Kim Sowol as the first poet to tragically expose the collapse of modern interiority and community. The notion of interiority articulated from this position, I propose, should be understood and reaffirmed as the tragic origin of modern Korean lyric poetry.
