Abstract

This study reconstructs the transformation of sixteenth-century medicine through the concept of the forum, or arena of debate. Unlike earlier scholarship that portrayed Andreas Vesalius as a solitary innovator, this paper situates his De humani corporis fabrica (1543/1555) within a multilayered network of debates involving university classrooms, anatomical theatres, print culture, surgeons’ guilds, and philosophical–religious discourses. Based on the research, Vesalius, in the university classroom, invoked his own experiential authority — “ex propriis inspectionibus”(“as I myself have seen”) — thereby altering the text-centered hierarchy of authority; and the anatomical theatre functioned as a public stage of argumentative knowledge. Print culture disseminated anatomical debate throughout Europe by means of the Fabrica and the Epitome, and surgeons criticized and supplemented academic anatomy on the basis of clinical experience. Furthermore, Colombo, Falloppio, and Eustachi corrected the Fabrica and transmitted its knowledge in a deliberately argumentative mode, while philosophical and religious frameworks connected anatomical practice to conceptions of created order, mechanism, and humanist world-view. In this way, the debates within the discussion network surrounding Vesalius’s Fabrica ultimately facilitated the institutionalization of anatomy, stimulated the physiological revolution that culminated in the theory of the circulation of the blood, and contributed to the formation of a mechanistic conception of the human, the consolidation of visual epistemologies, and the popularization of bodily knowledge. In conclusion, Vesalius’s greatest significance lies not in being a solitary innovator, but in having opened the arena of disputation and thereby institutionalized the intellectual culture of early modern science.
