Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the sequential mediating effects of peer relationship quality and peer conformity in the relationship between adolescent sympathy and peer bullying bystander behaviors. 530 middle school students in G and I regions were surveyed, and then the questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and PROCESS Macro. It was found that the adolescent sympathy had a significant influence on bystander’s behaviors (e.g., outsider, defender, and assistant) by sequentially mediating peer relationship quality and peer conformity. The higher empathy was, the higher quality of peer relationship was. In case of high quality of peer relationship quality, the peer conformity was low. It was revealed that in case of higher peer conformity, the degree of tendency of outsider’s and assistant’s behavior was high, while the degree of defending tendency was low. These findings are significant in expanding the understanding of the variables related to bystander’s reactions in terms of empathy, peer relationship quality and peer conformity. Finally, limitations of the study and recommendations for a future study were suggested.
