Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether outsiders can be classified into subtypes according to personal(cognitive/affective empathy, emotion regulation, gratitude, moral disengagement, outcome expectation) and environmental(anti-bullying class norm) characteristics and whether there were significant differences in pro- bullying and defending behaviors across subtypes. 503 Korean middle school students(1st and 2nd graders) participated in a self-reporting survey and, among them, 107 outsiders were used for the analysis. Cluster analysis provided three outsider groups: “outsiders with positive attitudes toward defending” (28.0%), “outsiders with ambivalent attitude toward defending” (43.0%), and “outsiders with negative attitudes toward defending” (29.0%). The ANOVA revealed significant group differences in both defending and pro-bullying behaviors. Post-hoc tests showed that negative outsiders had significantly lower defending scores than the other two groups, and positive outsiders had significantly lower pro-bullying scores than the other two groups. Furthermore, ambivalent outsiders are similar to negative outsiders in terms of probullying behaviors while they are similar to positive outsiders as to defending behaviors. Finally, implications of the findings and effective intervention strategies for outsiders were presented. This study, focusing on outsiders which have not been addressed much in studies of bystanders, would contribute to the classification of outsider subtypes and more individualized intervention approach for each subtype to increase their defending behaviors.
