초록
본 연구는 달(В. И.
Abstract
This study reexamines the structure and practical manifestations of 19th-century Russian linguistic purism through V. I. Dahl’s Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language (1863–1866). In this period, French and German were widely used among the aristocracy, and foreign loanwords rapidly permeated Russian society. Against this sociolinguistic backdrop, Dahl viewed vernacular Russian as the essential foundation of the language and proposed an independent purist approach aimed at restoring the native expressive capacity of Russian. Implemented in his dictionary, Dahl’s methodology departed from conventional normative traditions by grounding linguistic legitimacy in actual usage. He did not categorically reject foreign words but advocated selective adoption when necessary, while promoting the creation of neologisms or replacement with native terms to highlight the productivity of internal linguistic resources. Despite the limited adoption of his approach due to dialectal bases, literal interpretations, and non-systematic word-formation principles, Dahl’s dictionary actively reevaluated the Slavic foundations and vernacular components of the Russian lexicon. Consequently, it underscores the theoretical significance of vernacular language in Russian identity discourses. This study reconceptualizes Dahl’s linguistic perspective beyond conventional assessments of purism, interpreting his selective acceptance of loanwords and experimental word formation as a cultural-linguistic reform exploring Russian’s internal potential.
