Abstract

This paper examines and analyzes example sentences to explore the similarities and differences in form, meaning, and function between the Japanese expression “sei” and the Korean expression “tat.” While previous research has addressed the Japanese “sei,” there has been little detailed comparative analysis with the Korean “tat.” Therefore, this study aims to systematically describe the structural, semantic, and functional aspects of these expressions. The results of the studies are summarized as follows: First, “sei” in simple sentences can take both the de and ni cases. The de case can express both “undesirable result” and “desirable result”, whereas the ni case is limited to expressing only “undesirable result”. Second, “sei” in complex sentences can only take the de case, showing four distinct usage patterns. Third, “tat” in simple sentences can take the i, eul, e, and euiro cases. The i and eul cases express only “undesirable result”, while the e and euiro cases can express both “undesirable result” and “desirable result”. Fourth, “tat” in complex sentences can take the e and euiro cases. The e case is used in four different patterns, while the euiro case is used in only two patterns. In conclusion, both “sei” and “tat” are used in simple and complex sentence structures and show the similarity of having several patterns for expressing both “undesirable result” and “desirable result”. However, the two show significant differences in the types of cases they can take. The Japanese “seide”, which takes the de case, corresponds to two Korean forms of “tat-e” and “tat-euiro.” In other words, “seide” as a single form conveys its meaning and function in Japanese, whereas “tat-e” and “tat-euiro” with two distinct forms express the meaning and function in Korean.
