Abstract

Contrary to popular belief, it is not easy to find a public reputation for A. Camus, the author of The Stranger (1942), as a novelist in Algeria. Algerians have criticized Camus primarily because, despite being a native of Algeria, he sided with France during the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962). Secondarily, it is an expression of dissatisfaction with the fact that the Algerians who appear in most of his works are described simply as ‘Algerians’ without any surname or name, and The Stranger is no exception. Finally, Algerian intellectuals have expressed profound discomfort with the fact that The Stranger, which we are trying to reinterpret in this study, portrays the murder of an Arab and its trial entirely from the perspective of the colonial perpetrators (Camus, the French, and Meursault). This incident can never be dismissed as an “individual absurdity”. When absurdity is internalized by members of a community, it begins to normalize. Normalized absurdity leads members to accept it as a given. So, when absurdity eventually becomes established as public discourse, the roles of rationality and irrationality, reason and anti-reason are reversed. This is why those in political power spread and “manage” absurdity to maintain their undue power. The novel that truly raises this issue is K. Daoud's The Meursault Investigation (2013). The Meursault Investigation literally intervenes in the Arab murder case and its trial from the perspectives of the colonial victims (Daoud, the Arab, and Haroun) rather than the colonial perpetrators, and from the present rather than the past. It repositions the absurdity not as an individual matter but as a matter of community history. In this respect, The Stranger can no longer be considered an independant work. It has become a work that must be read in conjunction with The Meursault Investigation. The intertextuality that develops between the two works is the reader's responsibility to complete as a third space. By reading these two works together, we will reflect on how a life that accepts absurdity and a life that resists it, the existential absurdity of the individual and the social absurdity that destroys the community, the lives of the perpetrator and the victims, the lives of the foreigners and the indigenous people, can be reconciled and resonate.
