1957년 『이방인』으로 노벨문학상을 받은 카뮈는 정작 자신의 고국 알제리에서는 ‘이방 인’으로 취급된다. 대체 어떤 이유로 카뮈는 이렇게 자신의 고국으로부터 푸대접을 받는 것일 까? 그 단적인 이유는 주지하듯 카뮈가 알제리 독립전쟁에 반대했기 때문이다. 1962년 프랑 스로부터 독립한 알제리, 반세기가 훨씬 지난 현재까지도 카뮈는 알제리에서 식민지 작가, 즉 알제리 독립에 반대한 ‘프랑스 작가’로 홀대받고 있다. 그래서 『이방인』을 비롯한 카뮈의 작품들은 알제리에서 대중들에게 거의 읽히지도 않으며, 심지어는 대학교에서 ‘국외자’로 언 급될 정도다. 작가의 정체성은 이런 관점에서 보면 작가 스스로 결정하는 것이라기보다 사회 가 부여하는 것이라는 사실을 알 수 있다. 카뮈의 정체성은 ‘알제리’와 ‘프랑스’라는 두 개의 서로 다른 문화적 절대 기둥으로 형성돼 있다. 그래서 카뮈는 알제리의 지성계로부터도 프랑 스의 지성계로부터도 비판을 받는 것이다. 정체성은 결코 ‘둘’일 수 없고, ‘하나’라는 생각이 지배적인 한 카뮈에게서 ‘이방인’이란 꼬리표를 떼어내기 어려울 것이다. 작품 뒤에는 작가가 있고, 작가의 뒤에는 그의 삶이 있으며, 삶은 그에게 주어진 시대적·문화적 상황과 연계되어 있다. ‘상황적 존재’인 작가를 텍스트 비평에서처럼 그의 작품만으로 환원시켜 평가할 수 없 는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. 우리가 오늘날 카뮈를 탈식민적 관점에서 재독(再讀)하고 재평 가해야 하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.
Abstract
Camus, who awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957 for The Stranger, is treated as a ‘stranger’ in his country Algeria. For what reason did Camus receive such treatment from his home country? The obvious reason is that Camus was well-known for his opposition to the Algerian War of Independence. Algeria gained independence from France in 1962. Even now, well over half a century later, Camus is still neglected in Algeria as a colonial writer, that is, a ‘French writer’ who opposed Algeria’s independence. So Camus's works, including The Stranger, are rarely read by the Algerian public, and are even referred to as outsider in Algerian universities. From this point of view, we can see that the identity of a writer is bestowed by society rather than determined by himself. Camus’ identity is formed by two different cultural absolute pillars: Algeria and France. However, Camus has been critized by intellectuals in both Algeria and France. Identity can never be ‘two’, and as long as the idea of ‘one’ dominates, it will be difficult to dissociate Camus from the label of ‘stranger’. There is an writer behind the works, and his life is behind him, and his life is intertwined with the times and cultural circumstances given to him. This is the reason why a writer who is a situated Being cannot be evaluated by reducing only his works as in text criticism. It is for the same reason that we must re-read and re-evaluate Camus today from a postcolonial perspective.
