Abstract

This study investigates how 7, 8 year old elementary students verbalize their experiences in diary texts by analyzing the sequential patterns of transitivity process types within a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework. To achieve this, 1,099 diary texts from the National Institute of Korean Language's non-published corpus were analyzed for their process type sequential patterns. The analysis revealed a frequent occurrence of material process sequences. In terms of transitional patterns, while sequences of material and mental processes were dominant, the study also highlighted the significance of patterns where relational processes intervened. Furthermore, despite their lower frequencies, sequential patterns involving verbal and existential processes exhibited noteworthy characteristics in explaining how learners verbalize their experiences. This research is significant for empirically demonstrating the applicability of sequential analysis to SFL's transitivity process types and for utilizing this method to explain how 7, 8 year old elementary students verbalize their experiences. Future research should extend this analysis by varying age and genre variables.
