Abstract

Previous studies on causative constructions have primarily focused on their grammatical features, while little attention has been paid to the translation patterns across languages. This study analyzes the correspondence between Japanese and Korean causative constructions by examining 350 examples of Korean causative sentences and their Japanese translations, as well as 350 examples of Japanese causative sentences and their Korean translations, all drawn from literary texts. The analysis focused on three aspects: (1) the form of the causative construction, (2) the animacy relationship between the causer and the causee—categorized as Type A(animate-animate), B (inanimate-animate), C (animate-inanimate), and D (inanimate -inanimate), and (3) the structural changes involving the subject and predicate in the translation output. Statistical methods were used to investigate these features. The results revealed the following. First, in both languages, Type A causatives (animate-animate) were the most frequent, followed by Types B, C, and D in that order. Korean causatives most frequently appeared in the “-i-” morphological form (48.8%), particularly in Types A and C. Second, Japanese causative sentences were most frequently translated into Korean causative forms (62%), while Korean causative sentences were most often translated into Japanese transitive constructions (50.6%). This asymmetry is attributed to the high degree of correspondence between the Japanese causative form “(s)aseru” and Korean “-ke hata,” and between Korean “-i-” causatives and Japanese transitive verbs. Third, while “-i-” was the most common causative form in Korean source texts, “-ke hata” was the most frequently used in Korean translations (55.3%). This is likely due to “-ke hata” being highly productive, structurally unambiguous, and semantically faithful to the original. Fourth, when causative sentences were translated into transitive constructions, four main patterns were observed: (i) retaining the subject and describing the pre-causative process, (ii) retaining the subject and representing the causative event itself, (iii) changing the subject and rephrasing into a base transitive sentence, and (iv) transforming into a semantically mediated transitive construction.
