Abstract

This study analyzes the representations and narrative meanings of artificial humans (robots) in the works of Unno Juza from the 1930s to 1945. While previous research has primarily interpreted artificial humans as utilitarian images of wartime technology, this study seeks to provide a more nuanced and multidimensional analysis by focusing on the various physical characteristics and narrative functions of artificial humans in Unno’s fiction. A survey of Unno Juza's works revealed a total of 14 texts featuring artificial humans, which can be classified into four types based on their external configurations: metal-type artificial humans, androids, pseudo-artificial humans, and cyborgs. First, pseudo-artificial humans are fictional entities that merely resemble humans in appearance, reflecting the illusions fabricated by science and the psychological anxieties that follow. Second, metal-type artificial humans emphasize their function as military weapons, symbolizing the militarization of science and technology and the objectification of human beings. Third, cyborgs—hybrids of human and machine—raise ontological questions about human identity by blurring the boundaries between the organic and the mechanical. Lastly, androids embody human desires for emotional intimacy with machines, opening the possibility of affective interaction between humans and artificial beings. Through a close analysis of the android type in particular, this study demonstrates how Unno Juza conceptualizes artificial humans not merely as mechanical entities or instruments of warfare, but as narrative devices that imply the potential for coexistence, communication, and affective resonance between human and non-human actors. As such, the representations of artificial humans in Unno’s works from the 1930s and 1940s transcend reductive notions of technological advancement. Instead, they engage with complex themes such as the development of science and technology, the violence of war, and the redefinition of human boundaries, thereby serving as literary devices that articulate the socio-cultural anxieties and contradictions of the period.
