본고에서는 형식명사 「ところ」에 나타나는 공간적인 의미에서 시간적인 의미로의 연속성을 「ところを」, 「ところで」, 「ところだ」를 대상으로 분석하였다. 지금까지의 연구에서는 トコロ형식에 대해 의미적인 공통성을 파악한 예는 있었지만, 공간, 시간, 모달리티적 의미로의 연속성을 포착한 연구는 보이지 않았다. 따라서 본고에서는 연구 대상인 이들 표현을 중심으로, 「ところ」가 지니는 의미 변화의 과정을 파악하기 위해 「ところ」의 명사성 상실, トコロ형식에 결합되는 격조사의 희박화, 더 나아가 모달리티적인 의미로의 추상화를 파악하기 위해 생략용법과 종조사용법 등의 문법 현상을 고찰하였다. 그 결과, ①「ところを」는 공간적인 의미를 나타낼 경우에는 명사구로, 시간적인 의미를 나타낼 경우에는 접속조사 용법으로 사용되며, 모달리티적 의미는 생략용법으로 나타난다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 또한 ②「ところで」는 공간적인 의미를 나타낼 경우 명사구로, 시간적인 의미를 나타낼 경우 명사구와 접속조사 용법으로 기능한다. 마지막으로 ③「ところだ」는 공간적인 의미를 나타낼 경우 명사술어문으로 나타나며, 시간적인 의미를 나타낼 경우 텐스·아스펙트 용법으로 사용된다. 또한 모달리티적인 의미는 「ところを」의 생략용법과 유사한 반사실용법으로 사용된다. 본고에서는 이와 같은 논의를 통해 「ところ」의 명사성 상실이 관련되며, 공간에서 시간으로의 연속적인 의미 변화가 이루어지고 있음을 고찰하였다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the continuity of meaning from spatial to temporal in the case of the formal noun tokoro, focusing on the expressions tokoro o, tokoro de, and tokoro da. While previous studies have noted the semantic commonalities within tokoro constructions, none have examined the continuity of meaning from spatial to temporal and further to modality. Therefore, this paper investigates the process of semantic change in tokoro by examining phenomena such as the loss of nominal characteristics in tokoro, the weakening of case particle functions in tokoro constructions, and abstraction toward modal meanings, using grammatical phenomena like ellipsis usage and sentence-final particle usage. As a result, (1) tokoro o functions as a noun phrase when expressing spatial meaning, as a conjunctive particle when expressing temporal meaning, and conveys modality through ellipsis. Additionally, (2) tokoro de functions as a noun phrase when expressing spatial meaning and functions both as a noun phrase and a conjunctive particle when expressing temporal meaning. Lastly, (3) tokoro da appears as a nominal predicate sentence when expressing spatial meaning, and takes on tense and aspect functions when expressing temporal meaning. Moreover, modality is conveyed through counterfactual usage, similar to the ellipsis usage seen with tokoro o. This paper concludes that the loss of nominality in tokoro plays a role in these shifts, enabling the continuous interpretation of its meaning from space to time.
