Abstract
This paper will examine Hume's theory of happiness from the position that his skepticism is a critical successor to ancient Pyrrhonism. In order to do so, section 2 will briefly introduce the characteristics of Pyrrhonian skepticism as found in the ancient Pyrrhonist Sextus' Outline of Pyrrhonism and Hume's philosophical masterpiece: A Treatise of Human Nature. Pyrrhonism is the foundational position underlying The Sceptic's theory of happiness and provides a persuasive theoretical foundation for elucidating its specific implications. Section 3 will present a detailed discussion of Hume's theory of happiness as presented in The Sceptic. Human`s pursuit of happiness can be understood through the two central polarities of Hume's Pyrrhonism. On the one hand, through doubt, humans do not accept dogmatic systems of human life. On the other hand, happiness from a virtuous life is important in that it is deeply connected to human passion and can only be fulfilled through social relationships. Section 4 will attempt to explore the philosophical-practical implications of Hume's theory of happiness. The Sceptic's discussion of human life and happiness makes us reconsider the problem of the pursuit of happiness from a philosophical-practical perspective. In order to pursue happiness, we need social relationships with others based on benign and social passion.
