Abstract

Human life consists of both doubt and faith. In the history of philosophy, skepticism emphasizes critical thinking through doubt, while dogmatism stresses systematic organization grounded in faith. Hume's Pyrrhonism is a philosophy that unites seemingly contradictory ideas of doubt and faith, skepticism and dogmatism. Hume achieves this integration by critically renewing ancient Pyrrhonism. The purpose of this paper is to present Hume's Pyrrhonism and its specific characteristics, and then to explore its philosophical-practical implications. While Hume was originally known as a critic of Pyrrhonism, recent studies suggest that he was also an advocator of his own form of Pyrrhonism in a more consistent way than the ancient. In other words, Hume's critical stance against ancient Pyrrhonism is itself based on a thorough and radical emphasis on the 'guidance of nature', one of the criteria for life already set forth by the Pyrrhonist Sextus. This paper focuses on revealing the specific implications of Hume's Pyrrhonism through a philosophical-practical approach. As an original approach that emphasizes the power and necessity of philosophy to solve daily problems, philosophical practice seeks to understand our life and the contemporary world. This highlights the need not just to reflect on philosophy but to actually philosophize. This paper is divided into three parts. In section 2, I will briefly summarize the philosophy of the Pyrrhonists prior to Hume. Sextus believed that we can attain tranquility through the suspension of judgment, but modern Pyrrhonists, including Pascal, disagree; for them, fideism, not suspension of judgment, is the proper means of attaining tranquility. In Section 3, Hume's Pyrrhonism is explained in detail. He sees tranquility not in faith, but in philosophy in nature and in leading a daily life founded on natural beliefs. This is the result of a critical renewal or radical reconstruction of ancient Pyrrhonism. In Section 4, I attempts to apply Hume's Pyrrhonism to the philosophical practice. If both dogmatic and skeptical attitudes have the potential to cause human suffering, then balancing the two becomes a crucial issue in achieving tranquility. Hume's Pyrrhonism also has important philosophical-practical implications in that it refers to the positive role of psychological, sentimental, and natural operations that support logical thinking.
