본 논문에서 필자는 아리스토텔레스의 행복개념과 흄의 행복개념을 그들의 철학적 세계관과 연결시켜 비교, 분석함으로써 아리스토텔레스의 행복개념을 비판하고 흄의 행복개념을 옹호하고자 한다. 이를 위해 필자는 첫째, 행복개념은 서술적 개념이 아닌 가치개념으로 이해되어야 한다고 주장한다. 둘째, 아리스토텔레스의 행복개념은 그 안에 나타나는 완벽주의적 성격 때문에 자기 모순적 상황에 빠진다고 주장한다. 특히, 아리스토텔레스의 행복개념에 나타난 절대적 가치관은 아리스토텔레스의 목적론적 세계관에 근거하기 때문에 근대 이후의 자연주의적 세계관에서는 호소력이 약화된다고 주장한다. 셋째, 필자는 서양근대철학사에서 자연주의적 성향을 가장 강하게 드러냈던 철학자 데이비드 흄의 행복개념을 그의 가치에관한 이론과 관련시켜 고찰한다. 흄의 가치에 관한 입장은 그의 메타 윤리적 도덕론에 잘 나타나 있는데 필자는 흄의 행복개념에 관한 입장역시 메타 이론적 성격을 띤다고 주장한다. 즉, 흄은 행복의 기준이 무엇인가를 논하기 이전에 행복이라는 가치가 어떤 종류의 가치인지에 주목함으로써 행복은 인간 정신과 독립하여 존재하는 객관적 가치가 아닌 인간 정신이 주체적으로 구성해 나가는 주관적 가치임을 보여준다는 것이다. 필자는 이와 같은 흄의 주관적 행복개념은 현대의 심리학자, 경제학자, 사회학자들이 전제하고 있는 주관적 행복개념의 이론적 근거를 마련했다고 주장한다. 투고일:
Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to defend Hume’s naturalistic notion of happiness against Aristotle’s perfectionist notion of happiness. I first set up the stage by stating that the notion of happiness assumed in this paper is the evaluative as opposed to the descriptive notion of happiness. I then set myself to criticize Aristotle’s notion of happiness on the grounds that its overly perfectionist character makes the notion fall into the trap of self-contradiction. After diagnosing the problem as being rooted in the unnaturalistic, teleological world view, I move forward to the defense of Hume’s naturalistic notion of happiness. I examine Hume’s sceptical analysis of his predecessor’s doctrines of happiness, for example, the Epicurean’s, the Stoic’s and the Platonist’s. I then argue that through this method Hume arrives at a meta-theoretical view of the notion of happiness, according to which all the preceding doctrines of happiness committed the mistake of making the erroneous assumption that happiness is an objective value. I then explain why Hume takes all the values, including happiness, to be subjective by drawing on Hume’s theory of morality. I conclude this paper by emphasizing the revolutionary role played by Hume’s new conception of happiness: the introduction of the subjectivist, multifarious notion of happiness which is the default notion in the contemporary study of happiness.
