흄은 행복에 관한 네 개의 에세이에서 각각 에피쿠로스주의자, 스토아주의자, 플라톤주의자, 회의주의자의 입을 통해 행복에 관한 다양한 관점을 제시한다. 이 가운데 흄이 기술하는 에피쿠로스주의자의 견해가 과연 실제 에피쿠로스의 철학에 부합하는지를 살펴보는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 흄은 에피쿠로스주의자를 끝없이 외적인 자극이 주는 쾌락을 추구하는 인물로 그린다. 이 에피쿠로스주의자는 철학적 반성을 하지 않으며, 행복을 얻기 위한 인위적인 노력은 모두 거부한다. 반면 실제의 에피쿠로스는 외적인 자극에 수동성을 보이는 대신 적극적으로 자극을 선택해 나간다. 그는 무절제한 방탕을 추구하지 않으며, 오히려 고도로 계산되고 절제된 쾌락을 추구한다. 이를 위해 에피쿠로스는 철학적인 반성을중시했다. 마음이 맞는 친구들과 철학적인 토론을 하며 우정을 나누고,최소한의 자극으로 만족하여 고통이 없는 상태를 추구하는 것이 에피쿠로스 철학의 핵심이다. 흄의 에피쿠로스주의자는 실제의 에피쿠로스에대한 가장 흔한 오해이자, 무한자극이 제공되는 시대를 살아가는 현대인이 유혹받기 쉬운 삶의 한 형태를 보여준다. 이에 대비해 실제의 에피쿠로스는 쾌락에 대한 철학적 성찰을 끝까지 밀고 나갔을 때의 쾌락주의가어떤 모습인가를 보여준다는 점에서 철학실천과 관련해 현대 우리의 행복을 위한 시사점을 준다.
Abstract
In four essays on happiness, Hume presents various views of happiness through themouths of the Epicurean, the Stoic, the Platonist, and the Sceptic. In this article, I aim to examinewhether the Epicurean position described by Hume is compatible with the philosophyof original Epicurus. Hume portrays the Epicurean as an endless pleasure seeker with external stimuli. ThisEpicurean does not make a philosophical reflection and refuses all artificial efforts to gethappiness. The original Epicurus, on the other hand, makes an active selection from stimuliinstead of responding to them passively. He does not indulge in debauchery, but rather pursueswell-calculated and tempered pleasures. For this purpose, Epicurus emphasized philosophicalreflection. It is at the heart of Epicurus’s philosophy that people should build afriendship by having philosophical discussions with congenial friends and try to be satisfiedwith minimal needs without suffering. Hume’s view of Epicureanism is one of the most common misconceptions about the originalEpicurus and shows a form of life that modern people are tempted to lead in the age ofinfinite stimulation. On the contrary, the original Epicurus presents a right hedonist whenshe or he makes a philosophical reflection of pleasure to the end. In this sense, the originalEpicurus gives a solution to happiness in our modern world in concern with philosophicalpractice.
