A Study of the Use of Social Indexing Politeness in Russian-Korean Literary Translation

The article discusses some problems arising in the translation of works of fiction from Russian into Korean with regard to the use of linguistic forms of social indexing politeness. The theoretical framework of the case study of translation examples draws upon the approach from the standpoint of interactional sociolinguistics which focuses on the situational meaning of a linguistic unit and on speech interaction within the socio-cultural conditions of a situation. By formulating a range of choice criteria for the use of forms of social indexing politeness at each of the three levels of the analysis of interaction – the level of speech situation, speech event, and speech act – we were able to examine the main difficulties that arise when trying to convey the interpersonal meaning of utterances, and the solutions thereof represented in the chosen text. The analysis of chosen text passages showed that the criteria for the choice of forms social indexing politeness in translation of dialogues from Russian into Korean and the resultant situational meaning can vary depending on the level of speech interaction at which it is performed.
