이 글은 자포로지예 카자크 집단의 초기 형성과정과 16세기 말 17세기 초 현 우크라이나 지역에서 일어난 카자크 반란을 중심으로, 우크라이나 역사의 “카자크적” 기원을 탐색하려는 논문이다. 자포로지예 카자크는 동유럽의 봉건적 반동과 오크라이나 지역의 열린 국경이라는 상황적 조합에 의해 역사의 무대로 등장한 경계인 집단이었다. 16세기 후반 드네프르강 하안 급류지대에 등장한 자포로지예 세치는 16세기 말 17세기 초 일어난 일련의 카자크 반란과 반(反)통합교회 운동의 주역이었으며, 카자크 반란과 우니아트 교회에 대한 저항을 통해 촉발된 루스(Rus’) 정체성의 자각과 각성은 이 지역의 폴란드화를 저지하고 우크라이나 정체성의 토대를 만든 최초의 역사적 전환점이었다.
Abstract
This paper investigates the Cossack origin of modern Ukraine with particular attention to the early history of Zaporozhian Cossackdom, the Cossack uprisings and the Union church movement in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. I argue that Zaporozhian Cossackdom appeared as a social phenomenon in the frontier zone bordering the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, the Moscovite Russia and Crimean khanate. I also argue that it was their evolution from a social phenomenon to a social organization based upon anti-Polish and anti-Union, and pro-orthodox “Rus’ identity” that paved the way for the Khmel’nitskii uprising, an ironic outcome, I conclude, which resulted in the emergence of the first “Ukrainian” statehood in the name of Rus’ identity.
