Abstract

The Jeju 4․3 Incident refers to the 1948 uprising against the single-party system and single-party government, as well as the massacre of civilians by state violence. Debates over the nature of the incident and the identity of the uprising’s leaders continue to this day. The state’s memory of the incident began to change with the publication of ‘The Jeju 4․3 Incident Investigation Report’(2003), but the perspective that identified the Jeju South Korean Workers’ Party as the main force behind the uprising remained unchanged. This perspective isolated the main force behind the uprising ideologically and reproduced another historical silence. This study analyzes the literary representation of the 4․3 uprising’s protagonists, which challenges the memory of history, focusing on Hyun Gil-eon’s weekly novel ‘Hallasan’ and Hyun Ki-young’s ‘Jejudouda’. ‘Hallasan’ and ‘Jejudouda’ focus on the fact that the leaders of the 4․3 Uprising were anti-Japanese activists during the Japanese colonial period, and seek to restore the process by which they were branded as “communists” after liberation and excluded from history. Additionally, they capture the anti-American sentiment of the Jeju people who opposed the US military government’s rule, interpreting the 4․3 Incident as a decolonization struggle. Furthermore, they construct a narrative different from the official memory regarding the Jeju South Korean Workers’ Party, which was identified as the main force behind the uprising, thereby creating a crack in the state’s memory. In doing so, the two novels demonstrate the response of the 4․3 literary field, which has filled the gaps in history.
