Abstract

In the part of the interpretation of Simonides' poem in the Protagoras, Socrates presents three interpretations. Among them, the first two interpretations are to be thought of as preparations for the last interpretation, and the last is the one that Socrates himself approves. But even in the third interpretation Socrates does not attempt an interpretation that reveals the real intention and meaning of the poet; he adopts a Sophistic method of taking the interpretative activity merely as a vehicle to express his own ideas. The ideas Socrates reads into in his interpretation provide crucial clues to a correct understanding of the Protagoras. Socrates reveals, explicitly or implicitly through his interpretation, that he does not acknowledge different grades of goodness; that his conception of knowledge is of such a kind that can be lost; that he discusses and argues on the basis of the presupposition of dichotomy between goodness and badness. All these show where Socrates stands with regard to one of the penetrating themes in the Protagoras: the measure of goodness. He disapproves both the weak measure of ordinary human beings and the strong, divine measure that is perhaps alien to humans: The measure he approves lies between the two extremes.
