Abstract
In this paper I will argue that the attempt to characterize Alexander's conception of soul as materialistic cannot succeed, because it makes use of a theoretical framework quite irrelevant to the most important points Alexander wants to make by taking the soul as the form of body. Soul as the form of body is a kind of form of forms, that is, a form common to the forms of constituent parts belonging to the substrate. I will show why a form of forms is not liable to the reduction which some materialists would use in order to eliminate the soul from the real world of legitimate entities. But what will be shown does not suffice to exclude all the possibilities to take Alexander's position as that of materialism; the kind of materialism excluded in that way is only the eliminative materialism, the strongest version of materialism. There remains a possibility to interpret his position as that of nonreductive materialism, a milder version of materialism. I will try again to show why one cannot go along with this possibility of interpretation, mainly by calling attention to how Alexander forcefully pleads for the causal efficacy of soul. Providing an incorporeal being like soul with such an active power Alexander can no longer be a materialist, not even a materialist of the weakest version. If we can follow Alexander expounding his idea about the agency of soul in living beings' activities in opposition to the Platonists and Stoics, we will be able to appreciate properly the asset of hylomorphism, the theoretical framework of which Alexander makes use.
