Abstract

The part about the interpretation of Simonides’ poem in the Protagoras has not drawn a lot of interpretive attention, although there are many peculiarities and interpretative difficulties in this part. Many commentators treated this part as a mere digression or a rather jocular caricature, and didn't even attempt a serious interpretation of the part. Especially, it hasn't been discussed at all why Plato constructed the drama of this part in the way that Protagoras asks the questions and introduces Simonides’ poem in his questions. As a result, it couldn't be avoided that this part was considered to be a hindrance to the unity of the dialogue. But if we have a close look at the background context of Protagoras’ questioning, we will notice that this part plays an important role in the drama of the dialogue and has important implications concerning the philosophical problems discussed in the dialogue. What is strongly suggested by the background context is that Protagoras has an intention to discuss the diversity of goodness in an indirect way. On the one hand, he understands that the diversity of goodness is a strong objection to Socrates’ argument for the unity of virtue, and on the other hand, he feels burdensome to attack Socrates’s argument directly by way of appealing to the diversity of goodness. Thus, he introduces Simonides’ poem in their conversation, which he thinks can offer a good opportunity to discuss the diversity of goodness. But his intention and purpose is frustrated by Socrates, who shows a better competence than Protagoras even in sophistic prowess.
