Abstract

Plato’s Protagoras is the dialogue in which Socrates critically examines Protagoras’ view on Virtue. The dialogue shows the contrast between the position that argues the difference of virtues and the one that argues the sameness of them. The contrast is also clearly distinguished in the argument of similarity between justice and holiness (330b-331b). What is special about this argument is that in such a comparison it puts a strong emphasis on the concept of ‘auto’ comparing the two positions. More specifically, ‘auto’ is not only mentioned several times but also plays various conceptual roles throughout the argument. This paper tries to demonstrate the significance of ‘auto’ in the argument by revealing various roles it plays in it. The argument of similarity can be divided into two parts. First, ‘auto’ ensures that it is necessary for justice or holiness not to have opposite property (like unjust or unholy) but to have its proper one (like just or holy), and also helps ‘einai’ in the ‘hoion’ phrase to be confined to specific meaning. Secondly, ‘auto’ is useful in solving logical problems that can be raised around the argument, including those about unjustified enlargement of extension and confusion between contradiction and opposition, and facillitates interpreting Socrates’ claim at the end of the argument as the renowned ‘Unity of Virtue Thesis.’ So it may provide another basis for supporting the general consensus among scholars that Protagoras is about the Thesis. The other roles of ‘auto’ given in the argument are based on its first role regarding the necessary characteristic of virtues. Thus, ‘auto’ can give unity to the argument of similarity by playing a central role itself.
