Abstract
In the Cratylus, while examining the two traditional notions on language, the conventionalism of language (suggested by Hermogenes) and the naturalism of language (suggested by Cratylus), in order to seek the true nature of the correctness of names, Plato makes two references to Protagoras. The first reference appears when Socrates asks Hermogenes whether he who maintains the conventionalism of language follows Protagoras’ Man-Measure Doctrine (385d2-386a4). The second reference occurs when Socrates, criticizing Hermogenes’ conventionalist viewpoint on the basis of Cratylus’ naturalism of language, asks Hermogenes whether he would be willing to take Protagoras’ education in the correctness of names for the understanding of the naturalist viewpoint on language (390d9-391d1). Protagoras is, in brief, respectively presented, in the first reference as someone embracing the conventionalism of language, while in the second reference as someone educating the naturalism of language: the references to the sophist, thus, seem to severely contradict one another. In this paper I aim to cast a light that such contradiction in referring to Protagoras in the Cratylus is, rather than an argumentative fallacy of inconsistency committed carelessly by Plato, in fact his deliberate strategy of dramatization for philosophical arguments, according to which Protagoras’ linguistic notion must be criticized for the self-contradicting characteristics. For this purpose, first, I shall introduce Protagoras’ ideas on language and the correctness of names in each reference, and analyze them, respectively, in connection with the conventionalism of language and with the naturalism of language. Second, I shall argue that Plato’s strategy to make two contradicting references to Protagoras in a form of dramatization indeed entails a significant thrust for criticism of the sophist with certain economical effects in philosophical arguments.
