Abstract
The Protagoras consists of two major parts: The former deals with the teachability of virtue, and the latter discusses the unity of virtue. But it is unclear how these two parts relate to each other, and this presents a problem to the unity of the dialogue. In this article I argue that Protagoras succeeds in the proof of the teachability of virtue in the Great Speech only by setting the criterion of virtue very low, and that Socrates’ questioning about the unity of virtue can be read as an attack to such a low conception of virtue. Socrates argues that wise Athenians think that the virtue is not teachable, on the ground that they allow anyone to speak about political matters. He also argues that virtue is not teachable, seeing that people like Pericles could not transmit their virtue even to their own sons. In response, Protagoras argues that since Athenians think that everyone has virtue to a degree, Socrates’ conclusion does not follow from the fact that they allow everyone to speak about political matters. He also points out that when everyone teaches virtue to everyone, natural talent plays a great role and sons of excellent people may turn out to be not as virtuous as their fathers. Protagoras’ conception of virtue revealed in these discussions may work as a criterion to distinguish civility from savagery, but not a criterion to distinguish excellent people among civilized people. Thus, even if Protagoras shows the former is teachable, it does not follow that the latter is also teachable. While the latter conception of virtue requires that virtue be not fragmentary, according to the former conception of virtue one may have one virtue but not another. Socrates’ subsequent discussion about the unity of virtue is an attempt to show in effect that the true virtue cannot be so fragmentary.
