In this paper I seek the structure of the whole course of the discussion between Socrates and Protagoras that takes up the last two third of the Protagoras, taking the Simonides passage inserted into the middle of Socrates' argument as a clue to this structure. In doing so, I hope to furnish a perspective for a convincing structural reading of the dialogue as a whole. This approach should also bring into view the real figure of Plato, struggling with the riddles of the historical Socrates.
Abstract
In this paper I seek the structure of the whole course of the discussion between Socrates and Protagoras that takes up the last two third of the Protagoras, taking the Simonides passage inserted into the middle of Socrates' argument as a clue to this structure. In doing so, I hope to furnish a perspective for a convincing structural reading of the dialogue as a whole. This approach should also bring into view the real figure of Plato, struggling with the riddles of the historical Socrates.
