Abstract
In Classical Chinese, the reflexive zi have not only a reflexive function but also an emphatic function. The coexistence of reflexive and emphatic functions within a single form is a cross-linguistically attested phenomenon, wherein the reflexive function is generally derived from the earlier emphatic function. In the case of Classical Chinese, zì initially operated solely as an emphatic marker up to the early Western Zhou period, with reflexive function emerging in the late Western Zhou period. Typically, in the other-oriented transitive constructions, the agent and the patient are distinct participants, as the action is directed from the former to the latter. However, in contexts where it is important to emphasize that the agent and the patient affected by the action are in fact the same individual, the emphatic marker zì gives rise to a syntactic function indicating the coreference between the agent and the patient.
