Rethinking the Discourse Function of Zhi(之) in ‘Subject+zhi(之)+Predicate’ Construction in Pre-Qin Chinese

This article mainly discusses the discourse function of zhi(之) in the “subject+zhi(之)+predicate” construction in pre-Qin Chinese. So far there have been many views that regard it as a topic or focus marker, but this paper identifies zhi(之) in the “subject+zhi(之)+predicate” construction as a topical focus marker that indicates the subject in the clause as a topical focus, in contrast with some element existing in the background information or presupposition. In other words, from the perspective of information structure, the subject before 之 plays the role of topic and focus at the same time and attracts the listener's attention.
Abstract
