해외에 진출한 국내 은행의 경영성과 결정요인에 관한 실증연구: 외환위기 이후을 중심으로

초록

최근 정보·통신기술의 발달로 인해 금융의 범세계적인 통합이 가속화됨으로써 국내 은행산업의 국제경쟁력 향상의 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 이러한 추세에도 불구하고 해외에 진출한 은행의 경영성과에 관한 선행연구는 매우 전무한 실정이다. 이에, 본 연구에서는 해외에 진출한 국내 은행 해외점포의 경영성과에 미치는 결정요인들을 탐색적, 실증적으로 살펴보고자 한다. 연구에 사용된 경영성과변수로는 해외점포의 총자산성장률, 총자산수익률 및 주관적 만족도를 이용하였으며, 이들 성과변수에 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상되는 독립변수로는 크게 해외점포 경영전략변수(경영자율성, 본사자원 활용정도, 자금조달/운용의 현지화, 인사정책의 현지화, 업무의 다양성)와 경쟁우위변수(정보인프라수준, 국제화경험, 마케팅역량), 그리고 현지환경변수(문화적거리, 현지정부규제, 정치적위험)로 구성하였다. 또한 통제변수로써 기업규모를 설정하였다. 그 결과, 경영전략변수로써 경영자율성, 본사자원 활용정도 및 인사정책의 현지화가 경영성과에 유의적인 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 경쟁우위변수로는 정보인프라수준이 경영성과를 가장 잘 설명하는 주요 요인으로 밝혀졌다. 한편, 현지 환경변수에서는 한국과 진출국간의 문화적거리가 클수록, 그리고 정치적 위험이 높을수록 경영성과에는 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 인사정책의 현지화요인과 정보인프라요인은 세 가지의 경영성과에 모두 정(+)의 영향을 미침으로써 앞으로의 해외점포의 전략적 방향성을 시사한다고 하겠다. 아울러 추가분석을 통해 진출지역과 진출형태에 따른 경영성과의 영향을 분석한 결과 유럽과 미국시장에 비해 아시아에 진출한 해외점포의 경우 경영성과(총자산성장률)에 유의적인 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타난 반면, 진출형태는 경영성과에 유의적인 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.

Abstract

This study explores the determinants of performance of Korean banks’ branches and subsidiaries in the Foreign Market.In this study, we used three dependent variables about the management performance in the banking sector; profitability(ROA), growth, and manager’s satisfaction. They are influenced by independent variables; strategy variables, competitive advantage variables, and local environment variables.Empirical analyses show that the strategy variables such as management autonomy, supporting resources of headquarters and localization of personnel management positively affect the performance. As a competitive advantage variable, the degree of information infrastructure does explain the performance very well. However, both cultural distance and political risk as environment variables negatively affect the performance. Also, local difference and entry mode made a significance positive impact on the management performance. In conclusion, we found that Asia market made more positive influence than Europe or America market. But entry mode did not make any significant influence.
