Abstract
This study is a study on illustrations inserted in nine textbooks used as beginner Japanese textbooks. We examined the function of illustrations, their presence or absence in each part of the textbook, and scrutinized errors and appropriateness. Numerous illustrations in the text were difficult to interpret as inferring content or helping them understand the scene, and all but one textbook used them for practiceand sentence practice. Meanwhile, the cultural introduction section incorporated photos and additional illustrations to enhance the explanation. However, when the size of complex illustrations, such as maps, was small, it was not possible to recognize the marked place, or when there was no explanation but only pictures, it could not be said that they were performing their role. Furthermore, when it comes to cultural introductions, be havioral culture enhances understanding by incorporating illustrations into the narrative. All of the location nouns were explained with illustrations except for one type. Whether it is a kimono or yukata, inaccurate and difficult-to-understand pictures do not fit the function as illustrations. The correct function of an illustration should be to present the title or topic; consideration should be given to understanding the content and flow of the unit only with illustrations, and the picture of the illustration should be real and specific. When practicing sentence patterns or expressions in the textbook composition, various illustrations should be used to help learners understand the scene, to enjoy learning, and to visualize and remember the learning process. When fully utilized, it improves the learner's learning effect rather than just decorating the textbook.
