Abstract
This paper examines and analyzes the Japanese textbooks published and used in high school in South Korea. The results were used to analyze and consider the relationship between the text and the illustrations, and whether the relationship helps or hinders learning. The results of the research and analysis revealed the following relationships: repetition, synonym, antonym, whole-part relationship, co-system, extension, and projection. In most of the cases, the extention relationship, which complements the information that the paintings and illustrations do not have, and the projection relationship, in which the figures in the illustrations speak the contents of the paintings, were confirmed, while the repetition relationship, which conveys the same contents between the two sides, and the similar relationship were the next most frequent. Some whole-part relationships were also identified, in which the amount of information and content between the text and the illustration forms an inclusion relationship. Antonym relationships, in which the contents are opposite to each other, and co-occurring systems, in which the contents are connected over time, were also identified in a small number of cases. Extension and projection relationships are characterized by the fact that they are composed of text and illustrations like cartoons to help learners understand and generate interest, while repetition and synonym relationships are characterized by similarity of content to facilitate understanding between learners. It was found that whole-part, antonym, and co-occuring relationships may decrease learners' understanding depending on the relationship between the contents of the text and illustrations and how they are arranged in the textbook.
