Abstract

This study analyzes the names, insertion units, and cultural keywords of nine types of textbooks used as beginner Japanese textbooks at universities. This study aimed to understand the subject matter and status of cultural keywords in each textbook, while also investigating their actual usage in the text. Nine textbooks, with a focus on those published after 2018, covered a similar number of insertion units and cultural keywords. However, we discovered that seven textbooks, with the exception of one, included the same number of cultural keywords, but lacked diversity and frequently introduced them with overlapping materials. Additionally, each textbook employed distinct markings for the same cultural keyword, and only two textbooks mentioned popular culture and media, which significantly influence learners' motivation for learning. Another issue is the limited introduction of cultural keywords in a single section, resulting in their insufficient usage within the text. We also discovered that, with the exception of one textbook, seven textbooks only used cultural keywords about regions or places as a background, without taking full advantage of them. More research is needed on how to show and utilize culture and how to organize sentences in the text, and more discussion is needed on the use and classification of the same keywords and expressions
