기독교 신학적 사유를 통한 한나 아렌트의 세계사랑의 의미: 성 아우구스티누스의 사랑의 개념과 세계 이해를 중심으로

이 논문은 아렌트의 많은 작품들 가운데 상대적으로 경시되었던 그의 학위논문 “사랑과 성 아우구스티누스”를 중심으로 그의 신학적 사유로서의 사랑과 세계의 비판적 연구가 이후 아렌트의 정치 철학의 화두라 할 수 있는 “세계사랑”으로 확장되고 성숙된 사상을 중심으로 연구한 논문이다. 먼저 아우구스티누스의 사랑의 개념이 실제 삶의 현실에 적용될 때 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이 모순 없이 병행되어 실천할 수 있는가를 검토한 아렌트의 비판적 연구를 분석하여 설명하였고, 아우구스티누스의 사랑과 세계 이해에 대한 한계를 넘어 아렌트가 발전시킨 “세계 사랑”의 사상에 대해 설명했다. 곧 아우구스티누스의 “무세계성”의 세계 곧 임시로 사용하는 천막과 같은 세계, 자체로서는 가치 없는 불모지로서의 세계 이해를 비판하고 이를 극복하기 위해 안식처로의 세계를 정치적 영역에서 실행하기를 원했던 아렌트의 사상을 고찰하였다. 아렌트가 갈망과 귀환의 사랑과 같은 아우구스티누스의 초현실적이고 비현실적인 무세계성의 사랑이해를 비판하고 이를 넘어서는 세계성, 세계사랑, 곧 책임과 돌봄과 배려의 타자 사랑, 세계사랑 곧 공적이고 정치적 사랑을 통해 누구나 세계성을 확보할 수 있는 안식처로서의 세계를 구현하고자 하는 아렌트의 정치철학을 오늘 우리에게 주는 의미와 연관해서 정리하였다.
Abstract
This paper aims to introduce amor mundi as one of the core political thoughts of Hannah Arendt in relation to Christian theological legacy of St. Augustine's thought. In the doctoral dissertation of "Love and St. Augustine" Arendt gave critiques of Augustine's concepts of love which are craving for objects and returning back to the origin of beings, as a surreal and impractical notions when applied in the context of practical life. After review of understandings of Augustine's notion of the world she also criticizes of images of the world such as a tent, desert or wasteland as the ones which have no values on themselves. After examining the concepts of the world and love revealed in Augustine's thought Arendt suggests the world as home for all people and love as public as well as political one which has the sense of responsibility and care for people. In order to construct of the world as home for everyone, she encourages people to love the world with political love having responsibility and care for the world. Only action as speech and deed exerted in the public realm in the common world can initiate to make the world as home for everyone.
