Abstract
Hannah Arendt and Jean Elshtain developed political theories based on Augustine’s works in many ways. Arendt’s and Elshtain’s interpretation of Augustine’s political theology can be called “confessionalism.” This point of view focuses on the limit of humanity without reducing or entrusting it to politics alone and emphasizes the existential structure and internal virtues of individuals. Unlike Heidegger, Arendt pays attention not only to death but also to the “natality” of human beings. These two factors are what she calls the “twofold before” of human existence. Elshtain places stress on the sinfulness of humanity. The political limitism of Elshtain is also based on her view of sin. The language that is unique to humans often makes things worse―especially in the public relations of men and women. Elshtain, however, finds a “liberatory moment” in Augustine’s theory of language. She also argues that the family as the particula of society can contribute to the justice and peace of a larger community. What is vital in Arendt’s and Elshtain’s understanding of The City of God is their explanation of caritas. Arendt insists that the common history shared by all human beings secures a unique place for the love of neighbors. According to Elshtain’s theory, friendship serves to connect humans more closely among family, friends, fellow citizens, and the state. Like Arendt, Elshtain derives a universal political ethic from Augustine’s doctrine of Adam. Elshtain proposes the “real ontology of peace” based on the fact that all human beings are descended from Adam. Overall, it is concluded that Elshtain better understands and applies Augustine’s City of God than Arendt does.
