Abstract
This article explores a theological concept of ‘political love’ (which binds the Christian’s moral choices and actions in the public, political realm) and applies this framework to the case of Korea. By cross-fertilizing Western theological perspectives and Korean Christian perspectives on political love, I aim towards a more complete understanding of Christian love’s political relevance, with special attention to love’s view of political violence. Given the goal of ‘cross-fertilization,’ I constructively propose a ‘political love’ framework that guides Christian social engagement. My methodology critically engages John Howard Yoder’s pacifist version of political love vis-à-vis Augustine’s and Reinhold Niebuhr’s accounts of political love. The second part of the article describes a Korean Christian version of ‘political love,’ with particular attention to the social and political engagement of the Protestant churches in the 1960s and 1970s. My argument follows these general contours:Honoring the sovereignty of God over history, Christians are prepared to resist any political authorities which attempt to make themselves absolute and play God. Christian political love endorses a just use of political violence as a work of love – for instance, the use of military force to protect innocent neighbors. Recognizing historical exigencies and human sinfulness and finitude, political love guards itself from degenerating into either naïve optimism or excessive defeatism.
