에디트 슈타인과 한나 아렌트의 사랑 개념: 두 유대인 여성철학자들의 박사학위논문을 중심으로

에디트 슈타인(Edith Stein, 1891-1942)과 한나 아렌트(Hannah Arendt, 1906-1975), 이 두 여성철학자가 함께 언급될 수 있는 요인이 있는가? 필자는 두 여성철학자의 공통점과 차이점을 양자가 박사학위논문에서 언급했던 그리스도교적 사랑을 통하여 밝히는데 본 글의 목표를 두었다. 그렇다면 슈타인과 아렌트의 박사학위 논문의 유사성은 ‘사랑’으로 규정될 수 있는가? 만일 그러하다면 두 여성철학자의 사랑 개념은 그 지향하는 바가 동일한가? 두 여성철학자가 박사학위 논문에서 언급했던 사랑의 최종 지향점이 그리스도교적 사랑을 논의하는 것에 있다면, 그것을 그들은 어떻게 구현하고 있는가? 우선 두 유대인 여성철학자는 박사학위 논문을 통해 첫째, 사랑이라는 감정을 논의한다는 점 둘째, 그리스도교와 연관된 사랑을 언급한다는 점에서 공통적 지반을 마련한다. 하지만 그리스도교적 사랑에 관한 유의미성에 차이성을 보인다. 아렌트는 그리스도교적 사랑이 보이는 초현실적이며 비현실적 사랑 이해를 비판함으로써 현실 속에서 책임과 돌봄의 ‘타자사랑’을 구현한다면, 슈타인은 감정이입을 통한 “나와 너”의 관계를 증진시킴으로써 드러나는 사이성(Zwischenheit)을 강조하면서 아렌트와 마찬가지로 ‘타자사랑’을 현실세계에서 제시하지만 그것의 한계 역시 지적하고 있다. 슈타인은 현실세계에서 드러나는 그 한계점을 아렌트가 비판했던 초현실적인 그리스도교적 진리를 통해 극복하고자 한다. 이러한 맥락에서 두 유대인 여성철학자가 박사학위 논문에서 그리스도교의 사랑과 진리라는 공통적 지향점을 갖고 있으나, 그것에 관하여 긍정적인 측면과 부정적 측면을 보이고 있다는 점에서 우리는 그 차이성을 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
Edith Stein (1891-1942) and Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) are there any factors that these two women philosophers could be mentioned side by side? The aim of this study is to reveal the commonalities and differences between them through the Christian love they mention in their doctoral dissertations. Above all, both of these Jewish female philosophers establish a common ground in their doctoral dissertations in two points. First, in discussing the emotion of love, and second, in mentioning the love associated with Christianity. However, there is a difference in terms of the significance of Christian love in each of them. Arendt embodies the ‘love for others’ by responsibility and care in reality, criticizing the surreal and unreal understanding of Christian love, whereas Stein emphasizes the Zwischenheit (Betweenness) which is revealed by enhancing personal relationship between you and me through empathy, presenting the ‘love for others’ in reality the same as Arendt, but at the same time acknowledging its limitations. Stein endeavors to overcome the limitations in the real world through the surreal Christian truth which is criticized by Arendt. In this context, it can be verified that both of these Jewish female philosophers have written a common goal of Christian love and truth in their doctoral dissertations, but the difference is that they point out different aspects about it, one positive and the other negative.
