한나 아렌트의 정치사상에서의 신학적 사유와 성 아우구스티누스의 신학적 유산: 확장된 신학적 지평에서 조명하는 아렌트의 탄생성과 행위

본 논문은 20세기 최고의 정치사상가라고 평가받고 있는 한나 아렌트의 정치사상에서의 신학적 사유와 그의 사상에 지대한 영향을 미친 성 아우구스티누스의 신학적 유산을 고찰했다. 아렌트의 정치사상은 인류사에 있어 가장 비극적인 시대라고 일컫는 20세기 초반, 두 차례의 세계대전과 600만 명의 유대인 학살, 그리고 전체주의 지배의 현장에서 유대인 여성으로서 아렌트가 온몸으로 겪어내며 치열하게 고뇌한 과정의 결과로서 탄생한 실존적이며 실천지향적인 정치사상이다. 아렌트가 표현한대로, 전통이 붕괴되고 권위는 상실되어 그 전례를 찾을 수 없는 전체주의가 지배하는 어두운 시대 가운데 그럼에도 불구하고 현실을 이해하고 극복하고 어떻게 삶을 지속할 수 있을지, 그리고 어떻게 미래를 가능하게 할 것인지에 대한 끈질긴 추구는 아렌트의 세계에 대한 책임과 세계를 향한 사랑의 발로로부터 가능했다. 이러한 아렌트의 고뇌어린 노력은 그의 박사학위 논문인 “성 아우구스티누스와 사랑의 개념”에 대한 연구에서 비롯되었다. 아우구스티누스가 새롭게 해석한 인간창조에 내재된 새로운 시작의 원리에서 영감을 받은 아렌트는 자신의 정치사상에서 탄생성과 정치적 행위로 재해석되고 재 개념화시켰다. 아렌트가 박사학위 논문에서 인용하고 차용한 아우구스티누스의 새로운 시작의 원리에서 인용한 탄생성의 원리는 종교적 개념이었지만, 이후 아렌트가 『전체주의의 기원』과 『인간의 조건』을 통해 전개한 탄생성의 개념은 아렌트의 성숙한 정치적 개념이 되었다. 이렇게 5세기의 교부 신학자, 아우구스티누스의 신학적 사유는 20세기 정치사상가 아렌트의 정치적 사유를 전개하는데 핵심적인 모판이 되었고, 아렌트의 정치신학사상은 아우구스티누스의 신학적 사유의 깊이와 넓이를 토대로 20세기 세계에 새로운 방향을 제시하고 새로운 시작이라는 희망과 구원의 사상을 전파하게 되었다.
Abstract
This paper addresses the impact of St. Augustine’s theological ideas upon Hannah Arendt's political thoughts. Arendt's political thoughts emerged within the context of the tragic periods of the early 20th century, marked by two world wars, the dominance of totalitarianism, and the Holocaust. Throughout times of crisis, Arendt's efforts to comprehend and overcome the present and envision the future were driven by her sense of responsibility and love for the world. In this process, the concept of Saint Augustine's new principle of beginning is reinterpreted and applied within Arendt's political thought. It is noted that these theological concepts from Augustine's work laid the foundation for Arendt's mature political concepts. As such, Augustine's theological ideas played a crucial role in shaping Arendt's political thoughts. Consequently, exploring the theological ideas of Augustine embedded in Hannah Arendt's political thoughts reveal the bridging and expansion of boundaries between realms that have traditionally been perceived as separate: politics and religion, the worldly and the Christian, the secular and the ecclesiastical, divine love and worldly affection, as well as various academic disciplines and theological frontiers. Through Arendt's works, theological ideas that were previously confined within church doctrines and traditions extend beyond the walls of Christianity, finding reinterpretation and expansion in the language of various scholarly terms and in the events of the world and daily life, thereby gaining renewed vitality.
